Homework 10/5

Tomorrow is our Language Arts Unit 1 Test. This should all be review for the students and I think each and everyone of them will do very well! I have sent home an extensive review with the students so that they can study. If they turn in their review they will recieve an 100 for a daily grade.

In addition to studying for their test they also have math drills to complete. I sent home a letter about Math fluency with a set of math flash cards. The students are to drill 3 times and each time they are to practice for a minute and half. In that minute in half the child will want to get as many cards as they can right (the goal to work to is 30). Please sign the form with the flashcards and send back to school! I suggest you keep the flash cards in a zip lock baggie handie to practice weekly!!
Thanks.

Math Fluency Letter Home

Fluency with basic multiplication facts are extremely important for student’s success.  Quickly recalling basic facts will significantly impact students as they move onto higher level math skills. Fluency in these areas will support concept development, promote better understanding and build confidence in your child. Without fluency, students will struggle as they reach middle school. Basic math facts are essential to solving multi-digit multiplication, long division, word problems and pre-algebra. Please understand that a great deal of emphasis will continue to be placed on basic fact fluency throughout the entire year. The website http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/ is a fantastic website that offers fact fluency practice with a competitive spin.  I am sending home multiplication flashcards that can be cut out for practice, if you do not already have a set of flashcards. Tonight’s homework will require basic multiplication flashcards. Thank you for your continued support.

Newsletter to Parents from Mrs. Embley

10/4/11
Welcome to October! We have made it to fall and the cooler weather. Fall is one of the best times of year at Redd School and I absolutely love what we have in store the upcoming weeks. I hope you have been noticing your child expanding their knowledge on so many topics! We have covered a lot of material all ready and I am so proud of each of them.
We have been covering the Regions of the United States in Social Studies and all the students are doing very well with their geography. This week the students Time Line Projects were due and I loved each and every one! The time lines are so fun to see with all the personal pictures and stories! I will be getting their final grades on the projects back soon. Please be sure your child is studying their Midwest Region for the Quiz tomorrow. I have sent home a study guide we completed in class.
In Language Arts we are moving into Spelling Unit 7. This week’s list is about knowing when you are using enough letters or you have added too many (notice there are some contractions). In addition to that, we are having a unit test over sentences, complete subjects & predicates as well as simple subjects and simple predicates. The review will be given out tomorrow and we will go over it again in class. We just tested over Ben & Me Chapters 4-6. This test was an open book test (I told the students the day of to be sure they still studied). We had great test grades!! We are going to be moving on to Chapters 7-9 in Ben & Me in the next week so over the weekend please have your child re-read these chapters.  We are getting close to finishing the book and I can’t wait to start our Holocaust Unit next!
We are moving right along in Math also! We are getting caught up on our math facts and exploring Roman Numerals. We have also been doing a lot of word problems. Before we move on to our next unit we are going to review Roman Numerals and test over it next week. If you feel your child might benefit from extra math help OR want to encourage them to enjoy math, please send a note with them to join the Math Club on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:45. Math Club is hosted by Mrs. Henry who is a mad mathematician who makes math so much FUN!! There is still space but it is limited so hurry if you would like your child to be present.
I hope everyone logged onto the blog yesterday to see the reminders for this month. Report Cards come out on October 19th and Fall Festival is October 29th. I still need two volunteers for our class booth. If you are available to fill a 30 min. slot or can do an hour slot instead of 30 mins. please send me a note!! I greatly appreciate the help. Another reminder be sure your child is selling Fall Festival Tickets- these help Redd School so much!
Lastly, I sent home an envelope yesterday with your Online Grading Logins. Please be sure to keep these safe. The system was having some difficulty yesterday and I know some were able to log on but unable to see the grades. As of now, you should have full access to your child’s grades. If you have any questions feel free to email me at embley.tricia@yahoo.com. I do try to email back immediately, but please keep in mind that after school hours I have family commitments and am attending Master’s Courses also. So if I don’t respond immediately I will get back to you within 24 hours. If it is an emergency feel free to call me at school or my cell 832-651-8387. Have a wonderful week and tell your child you are proud of their success so far in 5th grade!!

Homework-
Social Studies- Study Chapter 1 Review for Test Tomorrow!
Work on Rough Draft of Time Line that was started at school.

Show & Sign Progress Note.
Show Parents Letter, Assignment & Rubric of Social Studies Time Line Assignment.

Copy of what was sent home is below:
Your child will be coming home with Chapter 1 Vocab./Questions that they have completed and checked in class. I ask that you have your child review and study them this evening for our Test tomorrow. We have been studying Chapter 1 for over two weeks now, so I expect that the students will do superb on the Test!
In Chapter 1 we learned about History and why it is important to study and document it. We will soon be starting Chapter 2, which emphasizes places and geography of the United States. To merge these two chapters we will be completing a timeline of the “HISTORY OF ME”.  Today in class we discussed time lines and started a rough draft of our assignments.
In class, we will be discussing places in the United States and where each of us has traveled. I ask that you sit down with your child and discuss where they have been in the United States as well as their own personal history. While discussing this it would be a great time to show your child photos that they could include in their timeline.
I understand as a parent you are hesitant to allow your fifth grader to glue a photo of your treasured memories to an assignment. I also don’t want to be held responsible if it gets ripped, bent or tattered between school and home. So I ask you to please make photo copies or copies of the originals to be sent to school. CVS and Walgreens can duplicate photos for cents on the dollar!
Attached is a copy of the rubric as well as the assignment expectations. I appreciate your help in educating your child about the United States Geography as well as their own personal history. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at pembley@reddschool.com.
Mahalo,
Mrs. Embley

Homework for Monday 8/22

Students were given Ben & Me books today.  Each child recieved thier own copy- in which they are responsible for bringing home and back to school each day.  I have been reading daily outloud to the students. But, I want the students to re-read pages 1-15 tonight. We are working on vocab and questions over the chapters in class and there will be a quiz later this week if not next week (depending on how fast we progress).

In addition, I have asked the students to check out our class website (which you are reading) and play spelling games on www.spellingcity.com.

Here is the letter describing spelling city and directions:

This year, we will be using VocabularySpellingCity.com in our classroom. SpellingCity is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling and vocabulary words while having fun at the same time.
As a teacher, I will put up the spelling/vocabulary list weekly and your children can review the words, and play spelling/vocabulary games that reinforce the learning process.

Here’s how to help your child master his or her spelling/vocab words:
Simply go to http://www.spellingcity.com/ to see how the site works. To get started, click on “sample lists” and chose any list you like. Than try Teach me, test me or play a game link.
You can find our class list by using the tab “FIND A LIST” and searching by typing my name Tricia Embley, or you can go directly to my homepage which is:  http://www.spellingcity.com/embleytricia . You can bookmark the URL so you can find it easily for next week’s list too!
Many kids enjoy building their spelling skills with spellingcity.com. Please encourage your child to spend about twenty minutes, two nights in a row before our weekly test. Let’s work together as a team to ensure that your child becomes an independent, lifelong learner!
Mahalo,
Mrs. Embley

SpellingCity.com is a fun way to reinforce spelling skills in addition to their weekly spelling homework and lessons in class.
Have a great Monday evening!

Newsletter & Parent News

Click on the link http://www.reddschool.com/pdf/August2011News.pdf and you will see the newsletter from the school on what is happening right now!

Also your child should be bringing home a t-shirt order form tonight. T-shirt forms and money are due Thurs. August 25th. T-shirts are required for field trips and optional on Mustang Madness Fridays.

I also sent home a letter about spelling for the next weeks. It is pasted below:
Aloha Parents:

In the next few weeks, your fifth grader will be learning to spell words using the Scott Foresman Spelling Program. The words for the lessons will be presented to your child in unit form every Monday. You can help your child practice these words at home. I will be sending home spelling strategies that your child will need to choose for homework once a week to practice their spelling.  They will have 9 spelling activities to choose from and each week they will chose a different activity.  Be sure your child is doing a different spelling activity each week.  Once they have completed one spelling activity, they can mark it off on their spelling sheet for the 9 weeks. Another activity you can help your child study their words in addition to homework and teaching in class is listed below.
Dictation: Read out loud each spelling words. Have your child repeat the word, use it in a sentence, and then spell it correctly.   Check to make sure that your child has spelled the word correctly. If any words are misspelled, help your child figure out a strategy to use that will make it easier to remember the correct spelling.
Thank you for your help- it takes a village to raise a child and a village to teach them! Here’s to a great first 9 weeks of spelling!

Mahalo,

Mrs. Embley

I also will be posting an exciting link to spelling city which is a website the students can go to play games to learn vocabulary and spelling words.

Hope everyone  is having a great second week back to school! Our first week was superb!!
